My theory: the ancient Artifact acts as a receptacle for concentrated familial bonds. These bonds, when subjected to intense alchemical pressure, sublimate into the metallic form of Gold Coin. Its value is then psychically projected onto it by the collective unconscious of the Family, thus imbuing it with inherent worth.
